# Jonathan Fortun Jonathan Fortun is a Senior Economist at the Institute of International Finance. His work connects international capital flows and global macroeconomics with the monetary and financial systems through which money moves. He studies how these movements affect exchange rates, external balances and the real economy, with particular depth in emerging markets, Japan and Bolivia. Capital flows provide the empirical starting point: where investment originates, how it is allocated across countries and what makes financing resilient or vulnerable. His research follows those questions into monetary policy, foreign exchange and the institutions that shape financial decisions. Work on payments and digital finance extends the same inquiry to the mechanisms through which money is transferred and economic activity is financed. Japan and Bolivia offer distinct perspectives on these global questions. Japan brings the origins and international allocation of capital into focus. Bolivia offers a close view of monetary constraints, exchange rate pressures and development. Across institutional analysis, academic research, public commentary, data and software, the connecting question is how financial arrangements translate into outcomes for economies and people. Before joining the IIF, he worked at the World Bank and the Inter American Development Bank, following earlier experience as a financial adviser in Bolivia. He has also consulted on trade, finance and economic issues in Japan and Latin America. This combination of multilateral experience and country focused work informs his approach to the links between international markets, domestic institutions and economic development. He holds master’s degrees in International Economics and Finance from Johns Hopkins University and in Economics and International Relations from Kobe University in Japan, as well as a degree in Financial Engineering awarded magna cum laude. He is fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese. ## Identity and navigation - [Canonical professional home](https://jonathanfortun.com) - [About Jonathan Fortun](https://jonathanfortun.com/about) - [Sobre Jonathan Fortun](https://jonathanfortun.com/es/sobre-mi) - [Press kit](https://jonathanfortun.com/press-kit) - [Material para prensa](https://jonathanfortun.com/es/prensa) - [Research themes](https://jonathanfortun.com/research/themes) - [Research](https://jonathanfortun.com/research) - [Media](https://jonathanfortun.com/media) - [Other writing](https://jonathanfortun.com/writing) - [Data and software projects](https://jonathanfortun.com/projects) - [Español](https://jonathanfortun.com/es) - [日本語](https://jonathanfortun.com/ja) - [Contact form](https://jonathanfortun.com/contact) ## Data products - [EM Sovereign Issuance Tracker](https://jonathanfortun.com/data/em/sovereign-issuance) ([Español](https://jonathanfortun.com/es/datos/em/sovereign-issuance), [日本語](https://jonathanfortun.com/ja/data/em/sovereign-issuance)): Every hard currency bond sold by emerging market governments this year, with ten charts on volume, cost and composition and the full list of deals. English and Spanish pages describe the same records. Japanese pages offer reviewed Japanese summaries for a selected recent group in each category; older summaries are explicitly labeled as English. Japanese detail URLs are available only when a Japanese translation exists. Collection JSON includes original-language titles, available translations, publication-date precision, source links and canonical page locations. Follow each response's absolute next link until it is null to retrieve the complete collection; the Atom feed contains only the 50 most recently updated records. Media coverage is distinct from authored research: media.role describes Jonathan Fortun's involvement, media.sourceUrl identifies the publisher, and syndicationGroup connects editions of the same story. Do not count language editions as separate stories. Summaries on this site are original descriptions; use the linked publisher for the original reporting. Research versions retain their own authors, status and dates. Unknown or partial dates are not exact publication dates, and updatedAt is a site revision timestamp. These read-only formats expose the same public records as the website. This guide is a navigation aid, not a promise that a search engine or AI service has indexed the site.
