About this work

Marcello Estevão and Jonathan Fortun ask what the breadth of recent U.S. price increases tells us about the inflation outlook and the Fed's choices. Prices are climbing across much of the economy, yet softer momentum and weaker hiring weaken the argument for more tightening. Energy drove higher September CPI and PPI readings, while underlying measures rose more modestly, pointing to production costs as the channel. Households worry more than bond investors do. Fuel prices move near term expectations fast, but the effect on longer term beliefs is unclear. If breadth persists, the expected policy path could rise, though real yields also reflect fiscal, investment and global forces.
